5th August
Steve rang Fred yesterday to check on the weather and state of the ice. WE are running into sometime today. The ice extends approx. 120 miles out from land.
However, it has cleared the land, so , we maybe able to carry on close to shore.....we'll see
First signs of green today..............everywhere else to date on Baffin has been white, red, yellowish, grey or black...................oooooooooo and white !!!! LOL
Labrador and Southern Baffin were quite noticeably devoid of birdlife and in some extents wildlife in general.....we realise why now...........they are all up here. Suddenly there has been an explosion of birdlife, it's amazing.
Auks, Terns, Fulmars, Petrals, Puffins, Guillemots.....................
Very few whales yet though and only a few seals. Polar bear earlier though....wwwwoooooow
About 30 miles South of Broughton Island we start to see the most enormous extent of sea ice yet..................it goes on forever....we estimate it to be at least 60 miles wide......some brash, some growlers some first year sea ice...................some huge, enormous icebergs !!!!!
Eventually we arrive at the edge of the sea ice, we find a way through close into shore and soon we are out of it. Strange effect that makes it look impenetrable from a distance.
At 14:00 we are approached by a local open day fishing boat........full of fishing tourists, we had a good chat and left them to carry on with their fishing expedition. The guide, an Inuit was asked about the ice to the north of the island and he said it was all clear............GREAT news. !!
