2nd August, just got my first view of Baffin Island, albeit through the binoculars....
More thick fog overnight, it really is disconcerting with the icebergs about (and the "growlers"). Anyway, it all went well, we passed a few with no major problems apart from a small course alteration. It certainly gives you confidence in the radar system when it picks them up 5 to 6 miles away.........all good practice for next year coming down British Columbia.........another place renowned for it's fog !!!!
64' 20' N, 62' 24' W.........East of Cumberland Sound
02:00 to 04:00.........3rd August, on watch. Beautiful morning............the sun is rising (about 02:30) over Greenland (nearest point about 300 miles, so can't see it.). We have a passenger ferry ("Sea Explorer") going to the South of us at the moment (on it's way to Monumental Island) and about 16 miles away we have a large iceberg about 5 miles away.
A red sky this morning, never a good sign for sailors, or so the adage goes.
Also the barometer has dropped from 1016 yesterday to 1013 today and we've got a bit of a mackerel cloud system hovering above. However, Brad from "Shear Madness" called us on the Sat phone yesterday with an update on the weather (our Iridium has gone on the bong at the mo.........could be the modem), from what he said it looks fairly quite until Monday / Tuesday. "Shear Madness" and "Migration" are on their way to Nuuk, Greenland.
Shear Madness, a 72 ' Nordhavn is owned by Brad & Kathy, we first saw them in Lunenberg. They are travelling with Migration a 68' Nordhavn owned by George & Marcy, they are all going to Greenland. Then Shear Madness is returning South for the winter and Migration is migrating ( ha ha ha) to France for the winter via Iceland, Faroes, UK etc etc.
The halo again..........just love it !!!
Cape Chidley, the most northerly point on Labrador, we're on our way.....
