Bras d'Or lakes - Cape Breton

Bras d'Or lakes - Cape Breton
The Bras d'Or lakes cut right through Cape Breton, on a line from South West to the North East.
In the South west the entrance is via the St. Peters canal, approximately 1.5 miles long it soon brings you into the heartof the lake system.
In summer the water temperature in Bras d'Or lake is so warm (65-70 deg F), it is rarely cursed by fog, which is so asssociated with the North East shores of the North American continent. However, fog can lie on the shores of the surrounding land masses, really weird.
Barra Straits has two bridges crossing it, the old railway bridge, which is no longer used and left permanently open (the metal framework bridge as shown below), the road bridge, however, is still used.
To open the road bridge you have to radio the bridgemaster on VHF radio Channel 16, he then watches for you on the strait and opens it accordingly.

The town / village on the west shore of the narrows is called Iona, this a shot of the church as we sailed through.

They did'nt open the bridge too far .........Steve panicked a bit as we went through.........the masts only just squeezed past !!!!

Now onto Baddeck for the night.
